When I first said I was going to have a heart in every post, I was a little worried it might be hard. But so far, it seems you can make a heart out of anything!
I had never made 7 layer bars before, and I am not sure if I had ever eaten one before. These. were. good. I mean, what's not to like? Graham crackers....good, chocolate.....good, coconut.....good, sweetend condensed milk....good. I guess I mean, what's not to love? Oh and they also have rice krispies in them so you can totally count that as breakfast, right? Right. They reminded me a little of
German Chocolate cake. The milk turns caramel-y and the coconut and pecans and chocolate. Seriously, you should make them.
It was Jesse's week to host and she has the recipe on her blog (HERE) as well as some great photos.
We couldn't find the heath bits with chocolate (actually Clare looked for them and couldn't find them and I took her word for it. She went to about 8 different stores.) so Clare decided we could use Heath bars. I halved the recipe and am glad I did. This is the kinda thing I will eat a whole pan of if it's available. Of course my kids helped, but I am much faster and they really are no match for me in a fight.
In the recipe it says to grease the foil. Uh, yeah, that's a good idea. I forgot and some issues getting my bars outta there.
Toasted coconut.
Toasted Pecans
Next time I might hold out the toasted coconut and add it to the top after baking. Has anyone tried that? I just wondered if it would make it prettier, and the coconut texture changed a bit from crunchy to feeling like I had a little piece of wrapper in my mouth at times.
So glad you guys liked them! The heath bits are with the chocolate chips! I have always seen them at every grocery store I've been to.
ReplyDeleteWe found regular Heath bits, but we couldn't find the kind with chocolate. We weren't sure if it would make a difference so we decided to go with the Heath bars since they have chocolate on them.
DeleteI guess if you are going to process them anyway, it really didn't matter what form you started with!! :)
DeleteYeah, that's kinda what I thought. I guess I am not sure if there was a difference since I haven't tried it with the chocolate heath bits. Maybe California has boycotted them.???:)
DeleteOh my goodness...these look amazing. Maybe I'll make half a batch this weekend!I am drooling right now. I like the idea of adding the butterscotch chips!!
ReplyDeleteYou definitely should make some Cheri!!
DeleteThose look so good-- I wish now seeing yours that I hadn't used just one thing of sweetened condensed milk! Yours looks so much yummier and mine were a bit dry. :(
ReplyDeleteLOVE the heart shapes... so fun, the whole heart everything this month. I think yours look prettier than mine, maybe mine could have been cooked just a tad longer?
ReplyDeleteThat is great we are on the same process of cooking when we made the bars. All of the ingredients are great. I wrote a similar line on my blog What's not to love!!!
ReplyDeleteLove the heart shapes! And I think that's a great idea to put the coconut on after! I for sure want to try that next time!
