Chick-fil-A Sauce

{I was going to make waffle fries but I am still scared of my mandolin since the 'accident'}
I don't hide the fact that I am in love with Chick-fil-A.  And most of the time I take it upon myself to bring up Chick-fil-A Sauce in every conversation I have, whether it's relevant to the topic or not. It's my favorite fast food place to visit and when we/if go, I get fries (with 80 packages of Chick-fil-A sauce) and a Diet Coke with lemon.  Have I mentioned I quit drinking Diet Coke?  It's been 2 weeks and I have only had one.  Does that count as quitting?  It's a miracle really and now I am going to try moving mountains with telepathy.  Anything is possible.

Anyway, back to the sauce.  I can't really even put into words how much I love the stuff.  And since going to the restaurant (if you can call it that) doesn't coincide with our goal to not eat out, we had to figure out how to make the sauce in order to eat Chick-fil-A at home.  I tried a few different variations over the past couple months and all my hard work has paid off!  Even Tyler, the biggest critic ever, has said it's shockingly close, if not exactly the same.  It's so easy it's ridiculous and it's now a necessity at our house anytime there are chicken or fries underway.  (It goes without saying, it's also super delicious on chicken sandwiches)   If you haven't tried the sauce at Chick-fil-A, you are missing out.  But now you can make your own.  :)  I don't think anyone is as excited about this as I am.

The only ingredients you need:  (sugar, not pictured)
I don't know how much it matters what mayonnaise and mustard you use, but I have found this to be the best bbq sauce for the job.  Some aren't 'hickory' enough and this one is perfect!

Chick-fil-A sauce
Ingredients:
3/4 cup mayonnaise
2 tsp KC Masterpiece Hickory Brown Sugar Barbecue Sauce
2 tsp yellow mustard
2 T sugar

Directions:
Mix all ingredients until combined and smooth.  Let sit 5 minutes for the sugar to dissolve and mix again.  Serve.

Seriously so easy and so good!  I am totally expecting to get sued because I discovered Chick-fil-A's super secret recipe. But it will be worth it. ;)

UPDATE 5/17/2013- I changed the mayonnaise amount to 3/4 cup from 1 cup.  Last time I made it that's all the mayo I had and it was even better.

*A special note:  This recipe is the best when enjoyed with homemade fries, it's more Chick-fil-a-ish.  We have tried it with frozen fries and while it's still super yummy, it's not as close to the real thing. :)
Also--Make sure your ingredients are fresh.  This recipe (and probably all others) won't taste as good with old mayonnaise.

  4. I <3 Chick-fil-a!! A friend of mine works there...and told me that the Chick-fil-a sauce is a combo of honey mustard and bbq sauce. Perhaps using honey instead of sugar will make your rendition much closer. Thank you for sharing your recipe...I am looking forward to trying it myself. :)

    1. I actually started with honey instead of the sugar and it wasn't quite right (it took me a while to get to this point) Then, I checked the ingredients the next time we went and honey isn't listed so I switched to sugar and had a much better result. Let me know what you think if/when you try it. It's pretty close.

    2. I heard it's a combo of ranch, BBQ sauce, and honey mustard. But this sounds fabulous.

  5. I tried this using Sweet Baby's Ray's Original Barbeque sauce; I haven't had the Chick-Fil-A sauce in a while, so I can't say if it's exactly the same, but I know it's pretty darn tasty! Lol. Thanks!

  7. I was skeptical, but I'm amazed..this really does taste almost exactly the same! If there were anything I could pick up on, I'd say it is missing just a tiny bit of tang that the actual sauce has, but I think that playing just a tiny bit with the amount of the ingredients can solve that problem. Thanks!

    1. Karlie, You'll have to let me know how it goes. I haven't done a side-by-side comparison, just tried to remember what it tasted like. Hope you like it!

  9. Excited to try this. The sauce was created by an owner that had several stores in the Fredericksburg VA area. It wasn't packaged back then. They made it by the gallon and you had to pump your own. Apparently, Chick-fil-a said they couldn't make it because it wasn't corporate. Glad they came up with a corporate version. We always tried to get the recipe but only got hints from workers. I was once told coleslaw dressing and BBQ sauce were in it. Coleslaw dressing is probably where the sweetness came from.

    1. The owner here in Fredericksburg gave the recipe to corporate in appreciation for what Chick-fil-a had done for him. The sauce was so popular here and then people starting asking for it across the country. They did a wonderful story about the owner and the sauce in our local paper "The Free Lance Star". I'm sure you can google it. I can't remember the original name for the sauce but was glad when they changed it to "Chick-fil-a Sauce".

  10. Question... this is the regular Chick-fila-a sauce... not the Honey Roasted Barbeque Chick-fil-a sauce, right? (Coz that one is MY favorite!!)

    1. Right, this is the one that just says "Chick-fil-A Sauce" on the package. I haven't tried the Honey Roasted Barbecue one. I will have to try that one next time we go.

  11. I don't really care for mayo. Can I use miracle whip instead?

    1. I use Miracle Whip for quite a few things, but I think the tangy zip would get in the way here. You can always try it. I just can't promise it will taste as much like Chick-fil-A sauce. Good luck. :)

  12. This is a delicious copycat. I haven't had chic-fil-a for a while since I live in Seattle and we don't have them, but it's pretty much just what I remembered!

    Thanks,
    Larissa

  16. I just texted my boyfriend saying we had to try this because he's always saying he wishes he could buy it in a bottle instead of only having it at Chick fil a. Thanks!

  17. Have you tried it with Lite Mayo?? Just curious if it changes the taste much at all?

    2. I made it with light mayo (Hellman's) and it still tasted pretty close to the real thing. I added a little more BBQ sauce (maybe 1/2 a teaspoon to a teaspoon) and it was VERY good. I made it with Iowa Girl Eats' recipe for the nuggets and it made for a fantastic meal. I know how much hard work goes into a copy cat recipe so appreciated!

    1. We have it regularly on chicken sandwiches but I haven't tried baking the chicken in the sauce. I'm not sure how it would go because of the mayonnaise in the sauce? Let me know if you try it!

  19. I have used Mayonnaise on my chicken for years, with and without breadcrumbs. It keeps the chicken very moist and tender. We don't like the crunchy stuff as it gets under dentures. So the Mayo helps keep the breadcrumbs are soft and well flavored. Thanks for this new dipping sauce, never had Chick fil a.

  20. Hey I tried this today and it was great. I used light mayo and sweet baby rays bbq sauce. It didn't have the same effect so I added a dash of McCormicks grill master mesquite seasoning. That did the trick. I tasted it when I finished it and after about 10 mins in the fridge. It was very different. Like you mentioned letting it sit for sometime really helps. It was great and my husband, who is addicted to Chick Fila sauce, was pleasantly surprised and super happy. Thanks for the recipe!!!

  22. Thank you SO much for sharing this. I made it and it's spot on. In a taste test comparison, I wouldn't know the difference. I made popcorn chicken with the sauce for NYE and everyone was saying how close it is. It's necessary that I make the sauce since we don't have ANY Chickfila's on Long Island (yet). So thanks again!

  23. I made this tonight to go with our dinner!! It's pretty dang close! I was so excited to try it because I went vegan and I loovvved this sauce with my waffle fries. I have been missing it! I made it with the Just Mayo mayonnaise to make it vegan and I used Annie's Smokey Maple BBQ sauce because I didn't have what you had recommended on hand. It still worked well! Thank you for sharing!
